During the last week of November and until December 6th, the entire city of Quito stops work and celebrates in the Fiestas de Quito, a celebration of the founding of the city. According to Spanish records, Quito was founded in December 1534 by a small group of settlers led by Sebastian de Benalcazar. During this festive week, Quito residents attend concerts and dynamic parades, drive around the city on party buses, watch bullfights, and celebrate with traditional food and drink. During Fiestas de Quito our school invited a traditional band and dancers to attend a daylong celebration. Here is a portrait of one of the trumpet musicians who played for over an hour for the students.
